Mussina Retires
Thursday, November 20, 2008
Mike Mussina was my favorite pitcher, and he has been for years. He was my favorite baseball player, because he was awesome, but mostly because he was doing a job and not ashamed about that. This isn't to say that he wasn't a competitor -- the night he yelled at Joe Torre to sit back down when he came to take him out puts the lie to that. It's just that he carried himself like he was doing a job, and that's professionalism.
So I'm bummed that he's retiring, but not surprised, given that he was doing a job.
I'm not going to repeat my feelings about whether he belongs in the Hall -- plenty of other people are doing that right now, and the general sentiment seems to be that he's close, but probably should go. And everyone is in consensus about his being a generally good guy and good player.
It's stupid, but I feel older for this. I've watched him closely for 10 years, I'd go to the park because he was pitching, and now it's one more thing that I used to like about New York and that part of my life that isn't there any more. To tell the truth, I think that this means more to me as a fan than the new Stadium.
Well, whatever. I'm old. That's fine. I'm glad I got to watch Mussina pitch so much, and I like watching Tim Lincecum and Wang, so I guess life goes on.
